I grew up listening to Cake, which is a alternative rock band from California, but I never really became interested in them until I saw them perform live. My family and I watched them play at the most recent “Shaky Knees” festival, and their performance was amazing. Their warm, upbeat music was, and still is, contagious. You could tell that the band was having fun while playing, and yet simultaneously seemed to be very relaxed. It was an experience to remember.

Cake has played a variety of music since their beginning, but their most common can be described as soft rock. Their Fashion Nugget album was released in 1996 and was incredibly popular; it happens to be one of my favourite albums, all due to its soft, calming songs. I admire how the album is made up of songs that can put forth a deeper, more meaningful theme that requires contemplation, while also consisting of songs that are upbeat and happy with more simple concepts. The album also covers the song “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. My favourite song on the album, however,  is “The Distance,” because to me, it is the most unique song. I think that almost anyone would enjoy this album because of the variety it encompasses.
