Mary Poppins hit the stage this weekend from Feb. 21 to Feb. 24. This production was especially unique due to the extensive sets and special effects used during the play. While the play itself was certainly impressive, the skills of the behind the scenes crew should not be ignored. Chloe Taylor, junior, was the stage manager of this production. The process of creating the show, albeit a long one, has seemed to have created an impact.“It’s been enjoyable with Ms. Stern, the new director. It’s been a little different,” Taylor stated.

This is the new director, Ms. Stern’s, first year. The show has not been without its up and downs due to the difficulties of running a musical in general. There are many elements that go into making a musical and sets are some of the most important.“We have such a big set and our stage isn’t as big. The wings aren’t that big, so we’ve had to shift stuff around and figure out everything backstage,” remarked Taylor.

This is not an easy feat, as the set is a major key to the show’s existence. The sets vary from the inner household to children’s bedrooms and outside parks. These have taken all the crew’s hard work to create. This show has countless special effects as well, including the implementation of wires to show flight and mobile set pieces. But, regardless of these difficulties, a beautiful musical can make it all worth it. From costume design to lighting, this musical has required lots of hands on deck. The cast and crew of Mary Poppins could not be a prouder group of students. “Seeing it all put together is nice to watch. Because we have been working hard on blocking and choreography, finally seeing the whole show looks good,” said Taylor.
