Halloween has come and gone, but the question remains. What should I do with all my leftover candy?

Food waste is an ever growing environmental issue. Buying large amounts of candy, or receiving it through trick or treating, eventually leads to many being dumped. in the garbage.

Instead of sending those treats to a landfill, here are some other uses for your extra candy.

  1. Donate your candy. There are many charities that accept leftover Halloween candy donations. They often use them to send to soldiers overseas or give them to kids in need. One such charity is Soldiers Angels. It’s Treats for Troops program allows families to donate their Halloween candy to our troops overseas or in Veterans Affairs hospitals.
  2. Bake them into something! There are multiple recipe online for leftover Halloween brownies or cookies that make use of any leftover candies you would like. They are a tasty new treat that will eliminate food waste as well. You can find one of those recipes here.
  3. Find another purpose for it. My family will often use our leftover Halloween candy to decorate gingerbread houses. It works out in our favor because we don’t have to buy any new candy to decorate the house and we can make it as fun and creative as we want!

Being environmentally conscious the waste we produce doesn’t just stop on holidays. It should be included every day of the year. So next time you reach to throw that candy away, try to find another use for it.
