On Jan. 13, the number one-ranked LSU Tigers squared off against the number three-ranked Clemson Tigers in the College Football National title. The LSU Tigers prevailed with a final score of 42-25. Going into the game, Clemson had the nation’s most efficient pass defense which was anticipated to cause LSU’s quarterback, Joe Burrow, some trouble. On the other hand, Joe Burrow was the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner who was hot all season and led his team to a 14-0 record going into the National Title game.

Clemson came out hot, scoring the first touchdown. Despite scoring first, Clemson’s defense was no match for LSU’s high-powered offense. This powerful offense includes wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson who each had over 1,400 receiving yards. With all this talent on offense, Joe Burrow had a phenomenal performance throwing for 463 yards, five touchdowns and zero interceptions. “Joe Burrow is a very diverse player. He can run the ball and is a very good passer. His diverse game transformed LSU into national champions,” says sophomore Brandon Foshaug. Burrow was the former QB for Ohio State but transferred to LSU after the 2018 season. The win over Clemson showed that LSU could be a dominant team in college football, and a force not to be reckoned with. This was LSU’s first title win since the 2007 season. LSU’s Head Coach Ed Orgeron became the fourth coach in LSU history to win a championship. After the game LSU broke the record for most points in a season with 726.  Burrow now also holds the record for most touchdowns ever thrown by a quarterback with 65.
