The outbreak of the Coronavirus has people concerned and scared for their life and chances of catching the Coronavirus.

The Coronavirus originated from a city in China named Wuhan, and the disease has quickly spreaded from there. The Coronavirus has the same symptoms as a cold which are a cough, fever and shortness of breath. This causes it to be difficult to actually identify if someone has the Coronavirus or if they just have a cold. In the United States, there are now thirty-four cases of people having the virus, and there are thirty-three countries in total that have had at least one case of Coronavirus.

The CDC has stated that the Coronavirus is mainly spread through person to person contact: “The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). Via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.”

One can also become infected by touching the surface that someone with the Coronavirus has touched. If you then touch your eyes, nose or mouth, you could become infected, but that is not the main source of virus.

You are most vulnerable to the disease when you are already symptomatic (the sickest). The CDC also says that the ability for the disease to spread has been difficult to track because it has been different in every country. “The virus that causes COVID-19 seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in Hubei province and other parts of China. In the United States, spread from person-to-person has occurred only among a few close contacts and has not spread any further to date.”

When sophomore  CJ Haden was asked how he feels about the Coronavirus, he said, “I am worried about the Coronavirus but since it has luckily not affected me or my family in a personal way I do not give much thought about it. All I can hope is that the government and health officials can get the disease under control and stop the spread of it.”

Hopefully soon, health officials can find a vaccine and treatment.
