The new live-action Mulan is based off of the original Disney animated film from 1998. The movie is about a young woman named Mulan who takes her father’s place at war, and has to keep her true identity a secret. Women are prohibited from becoming a warrior in the army, so she disguises herself as a man.

There are some key differences between the original Mulan and the new live-action, with a few key components missing. The dragon found in the animated film has been replaced by a phoenix that symbolizes her family’s ancestors guiding her throughout her journey. Additionally, the small cricket that followed Mulan in the original film was changed to be a soldier named Cricket who is friends with Mulan.

The movie focuses more on action and women empowerment than the original movie, and less of the movie is focused on a love interest. There is still a small love interest throughout the movie, but the connection is not as prevalent and is no longer a key part of the plot.

The overall movie was extremely well done and beautiful. The CGI is very realistic and the high-intensity action always kept me on the edge of my seat. I personally love the incorporation of the phoenix and soldier cricket, but I wish that there was a little more romance.

The meaning behind the movie is brought out a lot more in this film, when compared to the original because there weren’t many other components to the plot since they were taken out.

I would recommend this movie to those looking for an interesting action movie, but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone looking for a romance film. I would give Mulan (2020) a 9/10. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a 10/10 is because of the missing romantic side to the story, but other than that the movie was amazing.
