Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the 46 president along with Kamala Harris as 46 vice president on January 20 2021. Over an estimated 74.4 million people voted for him, making the former vice president gain more voters than any previous presidential election in history. Many people have put faith into Biden saying he could better America more than president Trump has these past four years.

During his campaign he, like others, promised multiple things. As many know from past elections and presidencies, no one ends up fulfilling or carrying all their promises through. So, could Biden be different? Or just like the other presidents with false promises for your vote?

Covid-19

During this election one of Biden’s main points has been that he will listen to the scientists to help overcome Covid-19.

Before, during the early parts of the pandemic, President Trump had been denying the danger of the virus. On April 24 the death toll passed 50,000 a few days later on April 29 Trump’s response was, “It’s gonna go away, this is going to go away.” Following that on May 5 the death count surpassed 70,000 and again only a few days later Trump’s response was, “This is going to go away without a vaccine. It is going to go away.  We are not going to see it again.”

Once more on June 6 the death count passed 110,000 and once again Trump’s response was to act as if it would go away, saying “At some point this stuff goes away and it’s going away” and “It’s fading away. It’s going to fade away.” He also said, “And it is dying out. The numbers are starting to get very good.” Those were only a few months of Trump’s responses. Biden is already showing more responsibility by wanting to listen to experts, instead of ignoring the problem at hand. This little thing could bring very much change for America and other countries.

LGBTQ+ Communty

Donald Trump and Mike Pence have shown extreme hate toward LGBTQ+ individuals during these past four years. Trump’s administration made it to where transgender people are not allowed to serve in the military. As well as denying LGBTQ+ people access to healthcare, they allowed federal adoption agencies to reject same-sex couples the right to adopt.

They have also failed to address the physical violence that has been against transgender individuals, especically trans women of color. Trump had also threatened back in 2015 to reverse the decision that legalized gay marriage throughout America.

In an interview back in 2011 with Bill O’ Reilly, at the time when Trump was considering running for president, he talked about his position and thoughts on same-sex marriage. “I just don’t feel good about it,” Trump said. “I don’t feel right about it. I’m against it, and I take a lot of heat because I come from New York. You know, for New York it’s like, how can you be against gay marriage? But I’m opposed to gay marriage.”

For even more information on how Trump’s administration has effected LGBTQ+ rights, this article from Planned Parenthood shows a timeline and other information on the community and its discriminations.

Biden has now announced that he plans on reverse the law that prohibits transgender people from entering the military based on religious basis. He also has multiple other plans to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from discrimination, by making sure sexual orientation isn’t the reason for people to be denied jobs and health care. Also, Biden’s policies will protect members of the LGBTQ+ community that are homeless, especially transgender women.

Climate Change

In the next ten years climate change will be irreversible. Society has tried to bring light to this very important subject because once climate change is irreversible, earth will just become worse until it becomes uninhabitable for human life. Currently earth temperature is at “1.16°C (2.09°F) above the 20th century average of 12.7°C (54.9°F) and the second highest in the 141-year record” according to the NCDC.

This shows that earth is starting to heat up and before we know it could come to the point man can’t change it, proving how climate change is real. These past four years when we could’ve been working on this problem, Trump has been ignoring and denying this urgent issue.

Biden’s administration has talked a lot on climate change during his campaign. He has also made plans for environmental justice and climate change. If these plans are carried out in the next four to eight years, it could be a major and very much needed change for the whole world.

Will he change America?

The president is only one person and can only do so much; however if he and his administration can pull through with a couple of his plans he created, it could bring change to America and to the whole world. His plans could bring equality and justice for those who deserve it.
