Feb. 20 Doubleheader against West Laurens and River Ridge

Coming off a 15-6 loss against Riverwood, the double-header against West Laurens and Riverwood did not end any better. The Hornets fell to West Laurens by a score of 6-4, and River Ridge 4-3.

Said reliever Jack Moore (12): “The offense was struggling to string hits together and score while the defense made simple mistakes and errors. Although we kept the score close, with a little more focus the games were both winnable.”

February 22: Hornets blow Esposito’s quality start

Game Summary (Graphics Credit: Rajath Prabhakar)

Baseball is hard. Elliot Esposito pitched 5 innings of 1-run ball. He allowed just 2 hits, striking out ten. In the first inning, Steven Vrolijk (11) came around to score off the passed ball by North Atlanta catcher Shane Nelson. In the 5th inning down 2-1, Nick Claerbout (11) got the inning started with a leadoff double. After Presley Martinez (12) popped out, Jack Crump (12) drove Claerbout home, taking advantage of the error by right fielder Chase DeLoach. 2-2. The following inning,  the Hornets got a couple insurance runs, courtesy of Vrolijk and Riley Slaughter (11).

Jack Moore, who had survived a runner in scoring position the previous inning, walked the first two batters he faced in the final inning. After he gave up a single to load the bases, manager Matt McCarthy pulled the plug. Colin Phillips (9) promptly gave up 2 swinging bunts to tie the game. After two scoreless innings, Nick Claerbout committed an error trying to turn a double play, allowing the go-ahead run to score. The Hornets could not match, stranding runners on first and third.

“It’s very frustrating” Moore said. “Simple errors and poor at bats as well as relief pitching not performing was the perfect equation for a loss”.

There isn’t a whole lot to say here. Steven Vrolijk started for the Hornets and got shelled. His final line: 1 ⅓ innings, 7 earned runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. It is safe to say the game was decided in the second inning, at the end of which saw Roswell down 8. The game ended on a mercy rule, with Adam McKelvey grounding out to short.

February 24:  Trip Dovale magnificent in Hornets win

In most of their losses, the Hornets had gotten off to bad starts, allowing multiple runs in the first inning. This would not be the case against the North Springs Spartans. Trip Dovall (11) was magnificent on this night, pitching 6 innings of shutout ball. After getting into a bases-loaded jam in the 5th, he responded by sitting down the next 5 batters. He finished the night with an emphatic 3-pitch strikeout of the right-fielder Ryan Grayson.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Hornets got a run in the second, with Caleb Parmele (11) driving home Jack Crump (12) with 2 down. They would break the game open the following inning, adding 4 that frame.

With 1 out in the bottom of the third, Nick Claerbout finished a great at-bat with a walk. Brady Decan (12) doubled, scoring Claerbout from first base. Steven Vrolijk drew a walk. With runners on second and third following Crump’s bunt, an error by Simon Gersten would score the pinch runner Emmett Lovings (10). Caleb Parmele took the 1-2 pitch all the way to the warning track in center field, scoring Vrolijk and Riley Slaughter. The junior would finish with 3 RBI on the night.

Roswell would add 2 more in the 5th inning, and it would prove more than enough. Jack Moore said of the win: “It was good to get the first one out of the way. Now we just gotta keep our focus and chase down number two”.
