On Aug. 9, 2024, the new movie “It Ends with Us” was released into theaters, leaving audiences in high emotions after viewing it. From the jump, people have been analyzing and criticizing the movie in comparison to the book, while others are completely satisfied. Although the movie is new, the story is not, as it has in book form for years.
Author Colleen Hoover published “It Ends with Us” in February of 2016, and even made a feature in the movie in 2024. Prior to the release of the film, fans were excited as the cast list was revealed. The main cast consists of Blake Lively playing the lead, Lily Bloom, Justin Baldoni playing one male lead, Ryle, and Brandon Sklenar playing the other male lead, Atlas.
Junior Kenzie Sheehan said, “I think they casted the ‘It Ends with Us’ movie well, considering that Blake Lively fits the role Lily Bloom perfectly and Isabela Ferrer is perfect for young Lily because she looks and acts exactly like Blake. Although, Ryle was made to look more put together and perfect, and in my opinion, could have been cast better.”
The movie has many people buzzing with their feedback, looking into the differences between the film and the book. While many of the main points were covered in the movie, a few very important details were left out.
Sophomore Katelyn Borland said, “I liked the book more because it included a lot more detail than the movie, especially on some situations like Lily’s parents’ relationship and Atlas and Lily’s relationship.”
One main detail many noticed is that the movie’s opening scene is different than the book’s. Another interesting detail that was left out in the movie was that Lily did not have a roommate like she does in the book. While these may seem small, they were important detail sfor many fans who had read the book.
The biggest difference from the book that everyone seems to be talking about is that the name of Atlas’ restaurant in the movie was changed. In the book, the name of his restaurant is Bib’s, because Atlas gave Lily a magnet that said, “Better in Boston.” In the movie, his restaurants name is Roots, which is still a reference to his relationship with Lily, but the souvenir magnet was never mentioned which was a significant detail to book readers. Borland also said, “The main thing I noticed that was different in the movie was the name of Atlas’ restaurant, which I was upset about because Bib’s was one of my favorite parts about Atlas and Lily’s relationship .”
The book and movie controversy is not the only drama regarding “It Ends With Us.” There has been a lot of press-tour gossip and drama regarding co-stars Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively. Fans started to get skeptical when Baldoni wasn’t photographed with any of the cast members at the film’s premiere. Along with this, co-stars do not follow Baldoni on Instagram.
Lively later spoke out in an interview that there have been multiple instances where Baldoni has made her uncomfortable on set. She claimed that Baldoni lingered longer than he should have when the two engaged in a kissing scene. Blake Lively also didn’t see eye to eye with all of Justin’s directing choices. Overall, the two actors didn’t necessarily get along, but respected each other and were able to film the movie working alongside one another.
Often when movies are made to replicate a book, not every detail is the same, but with the production of “It Ends with Us,” many people were upset by the complete shift in different parts of the storyline. The movie was produced well, but there are many mixed feelings about it as a whole.
