The 82nd Golden Globe Awards were held on Jan 5, 2025 and hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the first ever solo female to host these awards.
The ceremony is annually held at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, to celebrate the excellence in television and film. Additionally, there were two new award categories introduced this year, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.
Nikki Glaser, solo hosted this year’s awards, as 40-year-old stand-up comedian, actress, and TV show host, her achievements are quite grand considering her journey to first becoming a stand-up comedian. While the Golden Globes have had notable female emcees like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who have co-hosted the awards, four times from between 2013 to 2015, and again in 2021. Glaser’s solo act, filled with outstanding jokes, made history.

Jan of 2009, 24-year-old Glaser was living off temporary jobs when she got a call from the producer of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, she was asked to perform in place of the original guest, Paula Abdul, after she dropped out. This moment changed her entire life.
Glaser’s performance was very well done. She was even compared to past Golden Globes Awards host Ricky Gervais. Glaser jokes can be very taunting and leave an uncomfortable feeling in the air, but I think in some cases, it’s like she’s challenging the people she’s making jokes about.
In her opening monologue Glaser poked fun at Timothée Chalamet, Ozempic, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in Wicked, as well as many others. One of her jokes included making fun of Diddy and the accusations against him. She said, “I know Stanley Tucci freak-off just doesn’t have the same ring to it, but no baby oil this year.” I imagine the controversy with Diddy is still around, but she still chose to make a joke out of it because of how recent it was, and how it can shock others into laughing.
Overall, Glaser is an excellent stand-up comedian who genuinely has great jokes and makes her job look simple from how quickly a taunt can slip out of her mouth.
