Major changes on the state level came as a result of the midterm elections. One of these less focused on but nevertheless influential change is the voter-driven ban on greyhound racing in Florida. Considered cruel by many animal rights activists, greyhound racing has resulted in the deaths of over 460 dogs in Florida alone since 2013 . However, no matter the problems with greyhound racing, a new problem must be dealt with: the nearly 7,000 greyhounds in need of homes.  Because of Florida’s close proximity to Georgia, rescuing a former racing greyhound is a sensible way to help these dogs.

Greyhounds are gentle, loving dogs who desire affection. Although greyhounds compose the fastest dog breed, they are surprisingly satisfied with laying around the house. This does not mean they don’t require exercise. Greyhounds still need a relatively large fenced-in backyard so that they can run around regularly. Furthermore, greyhounds, especially ex-racing greyhounds need affirmative training. Due to their instincts, they may at first try to chase cats and small dogs but can trained out of this habit. Non-aggressive and good family dogs, even ex-racing greyhounds that have experienced isolation and hardship can make wonderful pets.

A all-encompassing resource that includes extra information about the breed and how to adopt is Adopt a Greyhound by the Greyhound Project. Other Florida adoption agencies include Greyhound Pets of America Greater Orlando, Greyhound Pet Adoption, and Greyhound Ranch Adoption.
