Greta Van Fleet: Rock’s Saving Grace
October 3, 2019
Rock and Roll has been in need of a face lift and Greta Van Fleet is just the solution.
Greta Van Fleet is a rock and roll band from Frankenmuth, Michigan made up of band members Josh Kiszka, lead singer, Jake Kiszka, Guitarist, Sam Kiszka, Bassist, and Danny Wagner, Drummer. They started the band as teenagers and have been playing together ever since. Their most recent album “Anthem of the Peaceful Army” is a both a callback to old school rock whilst giving a breath of fresh air to 21st century rock and roll. Although young, the band members each carry an immense amount of talent. Josh’s voice wields an ability to reach impressive high notes and guttural low ones. It comes out tinged with a growl, echoing the emotional impact of rock’s past. Jake carries the swagger of a heavy metal guitarist and his skills in playing are well beyond his years. Sam holds a calmer note, with his experience in bass bringing back the art of the instrument. Danny, has such an infectious amount of energy, not to mention the intense way he plays on stage.
But Greta Van Fleet has its share of detractors, with the common theme being that their sound is similar to Led Zeppelin. Of course, it’s to be expected that with such a genre, there will be overlap. Every artist takes inspiration from others and considering the newness of the band, where they are in the musical state is impressive. They are coming into their own style, which is evident in their newest song “Always There”.
It’s important that this band isn’t discouraged by accusations of copying. It will be better that Greta Van Fleet keeps carrying on this new age of Rock and Roll, or else the genre might die without it.
