A Review of Taylor Swift’s “Folklore”

Drew Maddox, Staff Writer

Taylor Swift has been one of the most influential singer songwriters of the past two decades. Among many other awards, Taylor has won 10 grammys and has 127 million followers on Instagram . She was my favorite singer growing up and most of her songs and albums speak to me. In the past she has released albums with many different kinds of music from country to pop.

Her new album, Folklore, was released on July 24, 2020. When it was released, she only gave a few hours prior notice for the album coming out. Fans were overly excited and it’s been said that it’s some of her best work yet. Unlike her albums in the past, most of the songs in Folklore are slower paced and muted rather than more upbeat and with a crowd-pleasing tempo. It’s a different style coming from Taylor that we aren’t used to and is considered to be an indie-folk style, I am obsessed with this style of music! The album consists of 16 tracks and there also is a deluxe album released with 17 songs. Personally, I think this is one of Taylor’s best albums. On top of her having a beautiful voice, she writes her own song lyrics and she’s extremely talented with the words she uses and how they are executed. Taylors talent isn’t just in her singing and songwriting, but also in her ability to continually reinvent herself by using many different genres of music.

Taylor recorded all of the music for Folklore during the midst of the pandemic along with another artist featured in the album, Bon Iver, who is someone she has never worked with before but this collaboration worked out very well. When Taylor released the album, she said that we needed something positive during these challenging times so she produced Folklore to make people happy and think positively from home. When I first listened to the album during quarantine I really did find it to be uplifting and inspiring. I would definitely recommend listening to it when you’re in a chill mood or even doing schoolwork, it’s really good to dance to but at the same time perfect for concentrating.

My favorite song in the new album is the fifteenth track on Folklore, entitled Peace. The lyrics talk about how Taylor is there for her lover but he takes it as her violating his peace. It’s a very beautiful song and I listen to it constantly. I love this song because it’s so beautiful and calming. I feel like I can relate to this song and just the overall album as well. I hope you can enjoy Taylor’s new album as much as I enjoy it.
