The most wonderful ways to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year
December 13, 2021
Despite those who get a head start with the infamous “Christmas in July” trend, others, such as myself, cherish the holiday season by embracing the best traditions once Santa has made his way through the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. To avoid getting caught up in the chaos of this time of year, I have chosen my favorite ways to spread some cheer.
First, kick off the holiday season by enjoying the seasonal treats that come with it; certain restaurant chains know how to promote their business during the holidays. While I am not one for Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte, I could not resist trying the Sugar Cookie Latte that was added to the menu this year. Although it did not have a strong coffee flavor, the sugar cookie syrup and green and white sprinkles certainly made for a tasty treat that resembles Santa’s favorite. For those who are not coffee fans, be on the lookout for peppermint, white chocolate, and gingerbread flavors of ice cream at Bruster’s Ice Cream. Ryan Buckley, 12, who works at the store, says “Even though the fall flavors were popular with customers, I am excited to try the peppermint. I love the peppermint milkshake at Chick-fil-a, but would love to support this business.”
Once you have gotten your sweet seasonal treat, take your friends or family for a drive to look at Christmas lights and other decorations around town. Whether in a neighborhood or downtown on Canton Street, white and rainbow lights are flashing, and wreaths adorn balconies and fences. For an even more enlightening experience, visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for their annual “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” show. After visiting in the past, I can say my favorite part was walking through a path surrounded by tall trees, as the lights danced along with music playing over a speaker. For a more affordable and local light show, however, visit a cul-de-sac in Devereux Downs, where a local family pairs their light show with a radio station for local listeners. Sadie Zeigler, 12, says how she “remembers visiting the local attraction since she was young, and looks forward to going every year.”
Lastly, the holiday season for its spirit of giving. One of my favorite traditions are gift exchanges with friends, whether that be a Secret Santa or White Elephant. While I prefer Secret Santa because gifts can be more personalized, White Elephants are a chance to recognize what all of your friends have in common, as well as to learn more about what they like when you play the game. My go-tos for this include fuzzy blankets, socks, slippers, earrings, and, when in doubt, gift cards. Zeigler says, “My friends and I usually do a gift exchange every year, which I love because I can treat them to things they like or need. It is always a good way to kick off winter break.”
