Which drugstore mascara is the best?

Isabella Doss, Staff Writer

The first day of research I used the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous X Fiber Mascara, which cost $11.99 at CVS. This is a mascara that I would definitely recommend. It gave me length and volume, as the name suggest. However, when applied, it looked like I had caked on 7 coats of it which does not really work for me. I prefer a much more natural look, but since I have zero eyelashes, that’s not really going to happen. I would give this mascara a solid 8 out of 10.

The next day, I used Maybelline New York’s the Falsies Mascara, which retails for $7.99 at CVS as well. I will say that the brush felt nice and smooth and that the formula was on point. My only problems with it was how fast it dried, so I couldn’t really correct the positioning of my lashes, and that the way it swerved my eyelashes did not stay that way throughout the entirety of the day. They started to all just sort of move to the end of my eyebrow instead of staying centered. It did, however, give the look of having little false lashes on under it with the length and curl I gained from the mascara. I would rate this mascara as a 6 out of 10.

On the third and final day of my mini-study, the mascara I wore was the Covergirl So Lashy! Mascara, retailing for $8.99 at CVS as well. The oddity of the brush gave it an unexpected advantage at getting each and every eyelash, but with that, you must focus very hard and apply it with a delicate hand to ensure that you do not get the mascara on your eyelid. Since this was my first time using this mascara, I had to use a makeup wipe to correct the occasional dots of mascara over my eyeshadow. I would give this mascara a 7 out of 10.

Now, of course, this study only goes for the three mascaras that I tested and not for the thousands that have filtered through the doors of drugstores. However, this mini-study should at least point you in the right direction and give you some suggestions as to what to try. The first contestant, L’Oréal Paris Voluminous X Fiber Mascara ($11.99), had a score of 8 out of 10. The second, Maybelline New York’s the Falsies Mascara ($7.99), earned a solid 6 out of 10. The third and final contestant, Covergirl So Lashy! Mascara ($8.99), scored at a 7 out of 10. As a result of the scores, the best drugstore mascara is the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous X Fiber Mascara with an 8 out of 10.
