The new jazz band conducted by Dr. Butcher is showing a lot of promise due to their size and talent. Starting on Wednesday, Nov. 14, the Roswell jazz band will go into full swing (no pun intended), beginning rehearsals as well as combo groups. The program has attracted around 30 students participating, as well as two veteran jazz musicians and the head band director Mr. Moon. The program is also including three to four combo groups, which means a larger variety of music can be performed. The jazz band is going to have three upcoming concerts, two of which will be on a band concert dates. Dec. 6 will be the night of the first band concert, including the jazz performance. Mar. 6 is the jazz band concert and May 14 will be the final band and jazz band concert. If students still wish to join the program, the class holds their practices on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon. Dr. Butcher will be teaching the students’ second line style jazz along with basic fundamentals and improvisational skills. The students will be learning basic charts, big band music and jazz renditions of popular classics. The jazz band’s composition has been the biggest turn out in years. It will include an extensive rhythm section, around ten horns and over ten saxophonists. With the variety of students and anticipated time invested into the program, hopefully this year will be the solidifying season that puts the Roswell jazz band on the map!
