Last year, Roswell High School implemented a Winning Wednesday for students.  On Winning Wednesdays if you were to have no missing assignments then you were allowed to leave school an hour early but if you did have missing assignments then you would have a hour long study hall to allow you to get all missing work done and turned in. These Winning Wednesday allowed a lot of students to both get any late work done and would also give them a motivation to make sure they had no missing work so they could leave early.

Unfortunately, in the 2021-2022 school year, Roswell High School has taken away this feature and we now have full days on Wednesday whether you have all your work turned in or not.

I believe that Roswell High School should consider returning Winning Wednesdays. I think that both students and teachers would both benefit from returning Winning Wednesday. Students would benefit from returning Winning Wednesday obviously because it would allow them to go home early but also because it would motivate them to make sure their work is turned in on time and it would also reward those who do have their work turned in on time. Students, who have late work, would also benefit from Winning Wednesdays because it would give them time in school to get work done.  Having students stay in school to finish late work may motivate them to get their work done right then, instead of going home and pushing off the late work until it is too late to turn it in. It would especially help those, who have other after school responsibilities like sports, jobs, or religious clubs, that feel as though they don’t have enough time after school, along with those other responsibilities to get all their work done in time. It would also allow students, who are not able to come in early to school or leave late because they have to ride the bus to and from home, to have time to go see teachers if they need help on a certain subject or talk to them about a project that they are having trouble with.

Teachers would also benefit from Winning Wednesdays because it would give them a chance to catch-up on grading assignments or making plans for future classes. It would also allow teachers to pull students one on one to talk to them about certain assignments or help them if they are having trouble in the class.

Adleigh Wheeler, Senior, stated,” As someone who has soccer after school everyday, I sometimes find it difficult to balance both my schoolwork and soccer. When we had the Winning Wednesdays it allowed me to stay after school and get any missing work done. Winning Wednesdays also motivated me to work harder at making sure my work was done on time so I could leave school early and have more time at home before I had to go to soccer practice or games.”

Overall, both students and teachers benefit from having Winning Wednesdays. That is why Roswell High School should consider bringing Winning Wednesdays back to Roswell or maybe something similar like Late Start Mondays or Wednesdays, where if you have all your work turned in, you got to come into school later and sleep in later then you normally would.
