Online dating harms teenagers

In our generation, the popularity of dating has never seemed to become unpopular to the public. Currently, it seems like the majority of people want to be in a relationship or have been in a relationship. Love has always been a huge topic in society. Although, nowadays people are going to extreme measures to find love. Why, you may ask? Because people are seeking for the definition of love and they desire a companionship, without troubles, and a partnership that satisfies them and their personal needs.

Online dating is the practice of searching on your device for people who like you and are open to engaging in  a romantic relationship. There are dozens of online dating services available. Each one has a different end goal but the one thing that online dating apps have in common is the “push” to find your match.

Although we are in a time now where millennials having access to technology is extremely accessible, it could be dangerous getting involved with an app that exposes you to so many things and different people across the globe. If it was an adult that was active on an online dating app, the dangers and risks would probably lower because they possess more common sense than the average teen.

Every year, 16,000 Abductions, 100 murderers and thousands of rapes are committed by online predators (“The Dangers of Online Dating”).

Research shows that since 2013, three times as many 18-to-24-year-olds have started using online dating,” which can be very dangerous by exposing them to situations that can be harmful.  Teenagers entering the world of dating app can be a danger to their mental health because it is developing their mindsets to grow at a faster pace than what they are mentally ready for.

It also doesn’t push teenagers to go out of their comfort zone and experience the true world of dating and all it offers. Personally, I feel as though online dating should be for adults and their last resort, when you feel like real world dating isn’t an option you resort to online dating. When you are so young in age, it’s hard to really experience the positives of dating in the real world when you are communicating and swiping left to right.
